How do we respond when someone falls?

In the sequence The Fall (NY) an unexpected fall is captured in New York, turning it into a quiet yet powerful reflection on the bystander effect.*. Through a sequence of successive images, the viewer witnesses how people react to an actual unscripted fall.

The series raises questions: Do we look away, intervene, or remain spectators? It is not the fall itself, but the reactions of bystanders that take center stage.

The Fall (NY) is an invitation to dialogue. Through a raw visual language and explores the position of the spectator.

The bystander effect* is a psychological phenomenon whereby people are less likely to intervene in an emergency when other bystanders are present. This effect is reinforced by the diffusion of responsibility, pluralistic ignorance, and social influences.
